In this two-colour silkscreen print, Alone, by Unga we encounter three nude male figures, surrounded by the deepest shade of black oil paint available. They appear to float in a sea of negative space, beyond time and without context. 

Alone continues to interrogate the position of men and the treatment of masculinity in art — ongoing interests of Unga. The characters depicted are the evolution of his iconic ‘fat man’, portraying ageing men as physically agile, vulnerable and beautiful.

There are many ways the image could be read: are these three figures together, or alone? Are they the same person? This ambiguity prompts questions about isolation and loneliness, conditions that resonate in times when life is locked down and lived online, and the strange experience of feeling lonely when we are together and connected when we are apart. 

This print will never leave you on your own — it even glows in the dark.
